Damocles (Grieks: Δαμοκλῆς, Damoklē̂s), letterlijk "Roem van de Mensen", was in het oude Griekenland een hoveling van Dionysius de Oudere, tiran van Syracuse. Hij was een vleier die tegen Dionysius zei hoe jaloers iedereen wel op hem was. Damocles genoot met volle teugen, maar schrok toen hij omhoog keek. Daar hing, precies boven zijn hoofd, aan een flinterdunne paardenhaar een vlijmscherp zwaard: het ‘zwaard van Damocles’. Bij het minste of geringste kon de draad knappen en zou het zwaard op het hoofd van de eregast vallen. Damocles verliet gehaast het feest.

De legende van ‘het zwaard van Damocles’ is ontleend aan de heerschappij van Dionysius II ( v.C.). Damocles, van wie niet bekend is of hij echt geleefd heeft, had volgens de legende een baan aan het hof van Syracuse.
